Spring 2016 semester: For my AI class, I wrote an agent in Java which plays Hus using minimax with alpha-beta pruning. I use the aligner frequently and deal with any errors that arise. I trained new models for English and French based on a larger dataset, using the training function built into the aligner.I have also fixed errors in Python scripts used to prepare our data occasionally. September 2014-Summer 2015: work on the Prosodylab Aligner. and for educating new RAs on how to run the scripts and aligner) (I also am responsible for fixing any problems in the prosody lab that other RAs have with our Praat scripts for annotation, truncation, etc. The experiments run in MatLab using a file based on our experiment template, which I slightly modified. In fall and winter 2015/2016 I ran perceptual experiments with stimuli created using the script. My advisor was David Yarowsky.Īugust 2015-November 2015: script in Praat (linguistics software with its own Bash-like language) for pitch and duration manipulation. Three projects (in addition to writing several smaller pieces of code for various other tasks): learning translations of grammatical terms based on the content of Wiktionary tables, in order to improve the quality/usability of data scraped from foreign editions of Wiktionary finding and assigning probabilities to new phrasal translation templates attested in a (Uyghur-English parallel) corpus building a morphological generator for Kyrgyz which generates all possible correct inflections and feature vectors of their meaning when given a noun or a verb. May 2016-July 2016: internship at the CLSP, working on machine translation for low-resource languages (in Python). Included in this vowel lengthening paper is an evaluation of the Montreal Forced Aligner on a gold standard human annotation against both another human and against the older Prosody Lab Aligner. Justifications are provided for the stimulus design choices and constraints implemented in the script. An implementation of the progressive cutback and replacement method in the Praat scripting language is presented, which is suitable for modifying natural speech for perceptual experiments involving VOT and/or related covarying F0 and intensity cues. Other acoustic properties that covary with VOT - such as fundamental frequency and formant transitions - are also discussed, along with considerations for testing VOT perception and its relationship to various other measures of auditory temporal or spectral processing. This paper contains a thorough description of the "progressive cutback and replacement" method of VOT manipulation, and comparison with other VOT manipulation techniques.
